Why Talking Improves a Provider/Patient Relationship

Dr. Cruz, recipient of a Patient-Oriented Career Development Award through the National Institute of Mental Health has concentrated his research on finding ways to reduce mental health care disparities and to improve provider-patient interaction. The focus of his studies has been low income and/or African- American patients with mood disorders.

With Dr. Cruz™s help, we will better understand how consumers can improve the care they receive by talking to their psychiatrist; how collaborating on treatment decisions is an important part of treatment; how some simple tips will help you overcome the barriers to developing a mutually beneficial relationship with your psychiatrist, and why doctor/patient relationships sometimes prove to be so difficult. Dr. Cruz has published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in these areas.
