There is a flash mob video of Beethoven Symphony-Ode to Joy with classical music with 50 String Instruments That Will Melt Your Heart. A flash mob is a movement that builds as "one person forwards it to 10people and they forward it to 10 people and before you know it you can gather tremendous crowds."  A flash mob is a demonstration of what technology can do but the First Annual Hug-A-Thon PittsburghTM Day is a demonstration of what hearts and visions melded together can do.

This started with another video sent to me by Sandra Baker, from the Heinz History Center about a Free Hugs Campaign started by a young man returning to Australia homeless. He made a sign that said "Free Hugs" and a worldwide symbol of hope began.

I was intrigued by the idea knowing Pittsburghers are so into hugging and I met with Event Planner, Mary Pam Kilgore and Strategic Operating Officer, JoAnn Forrester and we said we can have fun doing good!  Bill Peduto and City Council were our first stops, we thought if we could get them hugging, we could get the whole city.  Proclamation on Feb. 14, 2012.

Then we appealed to Donna Baxter of The SoulPitt to design a really up beat out of the box logo. Jill Kummer from BlackTie-Pittsburgh did the ticketing.  I met Al Levine on the Positive Pittsburghers Group on LinkedIn and he became our Development Director and led us to the Meadows for Races named for Hug-A-Thon Pittsburgh.

Building Bridges for Business was our first Supporting Sponsor and their staff helped with fliers and social media. Gregg Mathis of Pro Fry found RecordSetter.com ergo the Largest Hug in a Tent World Record. Sid Pandit & Martin Thomas recorded our progress and developed videos.

Our fairy Godmother sent Hank Walshak, Communications Director to lure in other media entities. Tamar Cerafici. The Barefoot Barrister, has generously given her time, support and sponsorship, and she's a new Pittsburgher.  Dean Quinn, Development Director for PositivelyPittsburghLiveMagazine.com founding sponsor Hug-A-Thon Pittsburgh worked on marketing and calling.

We chose our charities carefully for how their community impact.   Cancer Caring Center, Sickle Cell Society and Operation Troop Appreciation were picked because of the work they do and comfort they bring to those in need and distress.  The fourth charity, Pittsburgh Passion "Passion for Life Foundation's" goal of creating positive role models young people points to the future of Pittsburgh. Often non-profits work without accolades or acknowledgment and you can't get help when others don't know it's needed.  Let's all hug and prove that Pittsburgh is truly the Most Huggable City.  Group Hug Time!

****To further help our chosen four we have set up an IndieGoGo site where you can donate and the money goes to the beneficiary charities.   This campaign will go on to September 30, 2012.  To support them go to: www.indiegogo.com/hugathonpittsburgh

Tomorrow's Future Inc. is a mentoring, entrepreneurial and job-training program for teens. Under the guidance of Grace and Danielle Robinson , and with a core of dedicated volunteers, over 350 students throughout Allegheny County have had the opportunity to participate in the program.

The mission of Tomorrow's Future, is to equip young people with the basic communication, employment and social skills needed to compete in today's marketplace. The six weekly sessions held at Point State Park University bring a wide variety of diverse speakers to the program. They interact with the students to motivate and inspire them to go beyond the boundaries of their neighborhood community. As part of the activities of the program, the students participate in a "job shadowing day" visit to the Federal Reserve Bank. They meet and interact with the top management of the bank. The course culminates in an essay contest where the students share their vision for changing the world. The top three winners receive a scholarship. Other students receive certificates and incentive awards to commend them for their achievements and outstanding efforts during the course. For her efforts, she was honored as a Jefferson Community Champion in 2002.
