(C)  Patrick Clark. Go Buy this lovely thing  here
A good friend of mine, who also syndicates this column in her magazine when I can be pressured to write, is fighting inflammatory breast cancer.

Yuck.

She's doing it holistically. I've been doing my bit by making her homemade sourdough bread. It's such hit I think I might turn it into a business if I can ever get this law thing out of my system.

She's wondering what to do with the 60 odd years of show biz & family collections. When I visited her house, she was surrounded by dusty boxes that devoted nieces and nephews and children had brought in from their hiding places (and her house has a lot of them).

Starting in January, I've had my own weird health scare, involving eyesight and possible other complications. This got me thinking.

Just how do I let people know what I want done with my stuff? How do I cope with the possibility that I have an event that takes my sight, or and embolism that takes away my identity as a lawyer and rabble rouser?

Part of the answer comes in this brilliant post by Roberta Gately in the Sunday, April 9, Huffington Post.

She says this (which I plan to cross stitch and hang over my bed):

Moments to cherish are everywhere. The perfect rose in your garden may well not be the only perfect rose in your day. There are roses everywhere. Perhaps it's the older lady in line at the supermarket, bent and frail and fumbling for change and a smile, or maybe it's a soft breeze that ruffles your hair and reminds you that you are alive, or perhaps, a ray of sun that warms your cheek.
The beauty in our days is most notable in the subtle”the crack in the sidewalk that brings you back to your childhood games, the far-away friend who calls, the smile of a perfect stranger. If we can see the miracle in the ordinary, we can live a little better and leave a sweet foot-print in out wake.
It's difficult to foster this attitude when dialogues with clients and friends go like this:
Me: "Hey sorry I'm not going to get to those program notes; I tore my retina and might and had a minor stroke, so I can't see very well. It should be better in six weeks."
Conference participant: "I need those next week and your the only one who can do them."
Or, a friend: "Knowing about your problems doesn't help me with mine, you know."

What do I do? Life is too busy and full to just feel sorry for myself.

Retreat

I need to learn what my limitations are, how I got into this mess, and what I can do to improve my perspective. I learned this from a friend who lost 90% of his vision after a shingles attack. He looks very cool in his patch while he awaits cornea replacement, and he continues to actively practice law. But it took him a while to learn how to read with one eye, and to manage his energy so he could deal with the headaches (personal note: they are fierce).

Reframe

Is this a horrible blow? Is there something I can learn? How can I take this random experience and turn it into something good?

Reboot

Get back out there. Find the beauty in the day. Even the Bronte sisters found beauty in the gloomy moors around Hawarth Parsonage. There are days when I don't have a grey film over my left eye. There are things I can do with a film over my left eye, so I'm not completely useless. Now, how do I get out there, and move forward?

Today, I'll be a little more mindful of the stress that led to the attack. I'll look beyond the melting snowbanks in New Hampshire and watch the turkeys try to impress the females. I'll think of my garden and canning, and maybe draw it out with some new pencils my blind friend sent me.

I'll figure out how to extend my legal expertise to people who want it.

Baseball has started; The Pirates might win something this year. There are also buds on the apple trees. I'll have apples in the fall, barring a late frost!

Life is too full of possibilities to feel sorry or uncreative for too long.

The Best Way to Face the New Year is Clear

Everyone wants to start the new year with a clean slate; but that's not always easy to do especially when you have the same old problem staring back at you when you look in the mirror. That's what millions of acne sufferers face every day. Of course, for many, it's just a natural part of adolescence that causes angst for a year or two, before becoming a distant memory. For millions of others, however, it never goes away; and it sometimes gets worse, and more unbearable, over the years, often scarring their faces and their self-esteem.

If you have acne, whether it's a temporary phase, or a chronic condition, our advanced acne treatments, including lasers, chemical peels, collagen fillers, pulsed-light therapy, and pore-cleansing facials, can eradicate it and its scars! Clearly, it's the best way to face the new year!

Wouldn’t it be nice to add three superpowers to your clients sessions and have your clients look forward to implementing them at home?

Many practitioners struggle with getting clients to comply with Rx/homework that will really make a difference.

We know this is a weakness… and we know how to do something about it.

Introducing beautiful wearable protection, that helps your body listen, receive and create the conditions to give your cells Life energy and it adds three superpowers by using your present technology.

Your body can and will send electromagnetic information.

It works like this…
An energy protective inner lining that evolved out of space suit technology to keep the astronauts and cosmonauts from harm is married to luxurious soft and warm pashmina & silk materials.

This beautiful wrap creates a warm cozy protective healing cocoon that deflects harmful EMF and cancer causing waves away, and reflects your inner energies back to you so they accumulate, and recharge your own biological battery.

Our wrap gives feedback to your nervous system so circulation is improved, muscles relax in the nurturing warmth and your own body's healing mechanisms are being activated to correct imbalances.

Superpower #1 Protection:

The inner layer acts as a reflective shield to create a cocoon to protect your cells from the ravages of dangerous, zapping and cancer causing fields in the environment all around us.

Imagine an umbrella which ordinarily keeps off the rain, the protective pashmina keeps off dangerous electromagnetic currents.

Super Power #2 Reflection:

Your body's own energy gets mirrored back and receptor sites in your skin and glands now have feedback and information to correct imbalances. In as little as 5 minutes of feedback correction circulation improves, cool spots get warmer and hot spots get cooler and as a result, lymphatic circulation in the body improves.

Imagine if you will those shields for your windshield that purport to keep the car cool. Only the Pashmina pulls the energy in.

Super Power #3 Energy Accumulation:

As you are being protected an electrical charge is accumulated and heightened on your skin surface and directly in the cells recharging your body's biological battery, stimulating the autonomic nervous system and enhancing metabolic functions.

This protective shield also gathers and traps your body's own thermal heat which is similar to the effect of a gentle infra-red sauna. Skin temperatures can increase by 1-7 degrees, which is more than enough to lessen and even stop a migraine in it's path. What's more this subtle rise in temperature will thoroughly warm notoriously cold hands and feet.

Wrap yourself into a warm beautiful protective healing cocoon developed to reflect, protect, revive, regenerate and restore even the most tired, stressed or ailing body.

All you have to do is wrap your client while you are in session with them, and recommend that they take it home for one week, to see and experience the changes.

The changes are verifiable with your software, and also your clients will notice the changes usually right away. 78% of our clients purchase or rent the Wraps / Blankets after the first week. This adds weekly and even daily cash flow richness to your practice.

The ABC's of Delegation
by Joyce Kane, Cybertary, Pittsburgh

Do you know someone who desperately needs to learn how to delegate but just flat out can't?  Or even worse, won't?  Cybertary has pulled together a short tutorial to share with that harried individual to make their life a little less harried.  The tutorial starts with ABC

Analyze and Assign     Schedule some time in that busy schedule to review all of your daily, weekly, monthly tasks, ˜to-do's', routines and yes, even time wasters.  Put them on a  sheet of paper based on what you are good at or what you like to do cross referenced with those items that you can or cannot delegate.  You should have 4 quadrants at the end of the exercise, upper left with Good/Like /Can't Delegate, upper right with Good/Like/Can Delegate, lower left Not Good/Don't Like/Can't Delegate and lower right with Not Good/Don't Like/Can Delegate.   The analysis should generate something like this:

Good/Like/Can't Delegate
1.
2.
3.

Good/Like/Can Delegate
1.
2.
3.
Not Good/Don't Like/Can't Delegate
1.
2.
3.

Not Good/Don't Like/Can Delegate
1.
2.
3.

Be ruthlessly honest with yourself.  Pay close attention to those tasks where you make the proverbial excuse that it is just easier to do it myself .
Once you have your items listed in the quadrants, highlight or note those tasks that are not moving your business forward.  It could be that you are spending the time updating your contacts list instead of calling those contacts and making an appointment that could lead to a new sale. Or, you are organizing your receipts for tax time instead of invoicing your clients to generate cash flow.  Whatever you are spending your time on should be those responsibilities that will grow your business.  For any others, see the next step.

Begin the Balance   Here is where you take small steps it can seem like a tightrope, after all. Once you have analyzed and assigned the tasks, start to give some of those items in the lower right quadrant (Not Good At and Don't Like, but CAN Delegate) that are not contributing to growing your business to another person, either a trusted employee or a contractor.  By taking small steps, you start getting comfortable with the concept.  An added plus is that you don't like doing these jobs anyway.  Because you don't like them or aren't good at doing them, you have likely avoided tackling these responsibilities altogether.  With proper delegation, you have the opportunity to complete them by giving them to someone else to perform.
It can be enormously freeing to turn over the reins to someone whom you trust.  Ah, but you are saying, how do I find such a paragon?  Here is where Cybertary will put in a shameless plug.  Our network of virtual administrative professionals is poised to help you handle those tasks and help you get out from behind your desk, with a commitment to delivering quality, professional services.

Continue/Commit   Once you get your feet wet with delegation, you will find it surprisingly easy to continue.   Move through the list, tackling those items that you like to do and are good at, but that may not be propelling you or your business in a positive direction.  The time you have freed up by delegating the tasks that you can should be invested in those responsibilities that build your business.
Commit to reviewing the lists on a regular basis, perhaps monthly at first, then quarterly or semi-annually, as you continue to grow in your comfort level.  Add new tasks as they arise and continue to analyze and assess what you are doing and whether someone else could do them as well (or, horrors, better, faster, cheaper!).  You may also find tasks that simply do not need to be done anymore another WIN in the Quality of Life game.
Analyze and Assign, Begin the Balance, Continue/ Commit = the Primer to helping you grow your business through delegation of the tasks that are not helping you progress.  It's as easy as ABC!

We'll Push the Right Buttons to Stop Cigarette Cravings

Millions of people make New Year's resolutions in December then break them before the January thaw. While lack of will power is often blamed for this, it's usually because people start feeling that the obstacles, habits, or conditions that they're trying to overcome are insurmountable, and simply give up. In fact, this is quite common for those trying to quit cigarettes, even though they know that it will greatly improve their lives.

If you've ever tried and failed to escape the powerful hold exerted by nicotine addiction, we have an even-more-potent weapon. By concentrating our Stop Smoking Laser on key acupuncture points, we'll press all the right buttons to eliminate your cravings for good!

Roving Pittsburgher, Review of Homemade Food and Hometown Hospitality at PapaGallo's

Good News Reviewer Joanne Quinn-Smith aka TechnoGranny
When Chef Len Spampinato decided to open PapaGallo in July 2010, he realized that, in order to make PapaGallo a breakfast and lunch restaurant that would truly stand out, he could use only the freshest ingredients. To make a breakfast that really rises and shines means that he has to offer more than just the classics.

Roving Pittsburgher Review, "Salome", Not Just About "The Dance of the Seven Veils."

As the curtain goes up on the Pittsburgh Opera's 2016 presentation of Strauss's " Salome" the audience was immediately drawn in by the exquisite set design of Boyd Ostroff. Creating the illusion of fluidity and change in a one-act Opera is not easy, but between the beautiful bas-relief of the set design and the ever-changing mood reflected in the moon, the stage becomes a vibrant part of the productioN.

Roving Pittsburgher Report, Krampus Krawl, Alternative Christmas Experience

If you were in Market Square at the Holiday Market on December 5, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, you may have wondered if you were in a time warp that took you back to Halloween. Unsuspecting visitors to the Market Square Christmas Village were treated to a new kind of holiday experience.  Interspersed among the merry making shoppers and visitors were, creatures that appear to be the antithesis of Christmas.

Roving Pittsburgher, Review of Christmas's Favorite Nostalgia Show, " A Christmas Story, the Musical

A Christmas Story, The Musical chronicles young and bespectacled Ralphie Parker as he schemes his way toward the holiday gift of his dreams, an official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle (You'll shoot your eye out kid! ). An infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a double-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish. Chock-full of delightful songs and splashy production numbers, A Christmas Story, The Musical has proudly taken its place as a perennial holiday classic for the whole family.

2016 Christmas gift guide:
Techno Granny's Picks for Coolest Tech Gifts

1.  Microsoft Surface Book
Forbes says:  The Stylish Laptop That Trumps
Your MacBook Pro

Surface Book

If you've got deep pockets, then Microsoft's recently refreshed Surface Book is a system well worth taking a look at.
You get everything that you'd expect from a high-end system -- plenty of ports, a claimed 16 hours of battery life, an SD card slot, and Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M graphics chip powering the graphics.
There's as a stylus and touchscreen display for those who are artistic or just like jabbing at things with their fingers.
But as I've already said it's not cheap -- a 13.5-inch system equipped with a 6th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD will set you back a cool $2,400.

Probably the laptop that most closely resembles the MacBook Pro is Dell's XPS 13. OK, you don't get a Touch Bar, but you do get a couple of things that Apple doesn't offer:
-       7th generation "Kaby Lake" Intel Core processors (a generation ahead of what Apple has to offer)
-       A whole range of ports, from an SD Card slot to USB 3.0 and USB-C ports
I think that it's also fair to say that Dell's XPS 13 is affordable -- a 13.3-inch system running an Intel Core i3 with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD costs $800.
Dell's XPS 13

The new GoPro Hero5 Black is not only waterproof (so you don't need to put it into a separate waterproof case) but can also be voice-controlled.

Title: Monday Morning Marketeer, 22 Ways for Holiday Sales with Products & Service
Time: 11/26/2016 10:00 AM EST
Episode Notes: The MondayMorningMarketeer, Joanne Quinn-Smith, aka TechnoGranny has been off for a year writing books but she's baaaaack! And this time as Santa Claus giving you great ideas to finish the year strong without excusitis because it's the holidays. Client and Executive Career Coach Bette Novak will join with testimonial on how she has used JQS coaching to take her business into the big leagues. 22 Tips Really!!!! to increase your holiday sales and finish the year strong. Tis the Season to DO BUSINESS starting with "Back to Black" Holiday Sales, Small Business Saturday and not stopping with Cyber Monday.| If you were paying attention, this is a reschedule from last week due to technical difficulties.

Most departments within companies have to spend what is in their budget for this year to avoid losing it for next year.

This is what you may propose to organizations: "Is there money left in your budget from 2016 that you may lose next year if you don't spend it.  Let me show you a way to spend down your budget for maximum productive impact on your organization."

The holidays are the perfect time to build relationships with clients and customers. Most people are in a good mood, and are more open to being distracted with lunches, parties, and other things. Therefore, use this to your advantage to take clients out to lunch, thank them for their business, and foster stronger relationships. This will pay dividends moving forward!

Even if your business is done mostly online, set up Skype and Facetime with holiday decorations in the background and low Christmas music to put clients in a good mood. For existing clients, let them know you just wanted to get an update on what you are doing and an update on new programs that you have available.

The holidays are a great time to take advantage of your competition by outworking them! While they are making excuses, taking time off, and generally distracting themselves from what they should be doing (ie what you used to do), step up your efforts and take business away from them. Run some promotions, make some additional sales calls, and do some additional sales presentations while the opportunity is available.
Expand your product offerings.

Add gift cards to your line of products or services. Besides being quick to purchase and giving recipients more flexibility, gift cards infuse cash into your store immediately.
Offer gift card to you clients for amount of a great end of year program to give to friends, students, business associates not in business with them.

Business Advocate, Janet Attard from Business Know-How, recommends to ask for the Shopper's Email Address Build your email list every day by asking
customers and prospects to sign up for your email list to receive
       special offers,
sales notices or advance access to new merchandise.
Have signup links on your website or blog
and in your social media posts.
Put signs near your cash registers with Text-To Subscribe instructions (get details from your email service provider),
Put a flyer promoting your email list in every shopper's bag. Put the flier on your blog if you don't have an in person customer base and send it out in emails.
 Holiday Promotion

      Small Business Saturday
The most popular Small Business Saturday promotions in 2015 were

       limited time offers (24 percent),
       free gift offers (21 percent),
       coupon discounts (20 percent) and
buy one, get one free offers (19 percent). One for you and one for a friend  Or get an additional program free, highest money one is the one they pay for.
Run an OOPs I went a little crazy and made a calculating error offering on the BOGO for you to pay the lesser program fee and get the greater price one for free.  I don't feel like changing this so for 24 hours if you are crazy enough to read this email, you can benefit by my mistake. BUT ONLY FOR 24 HOURS Offer ends at midnight on___________

       Cyber Monday
For Bette offer 75% thru November 30  Run second (Christmas/New Years Special) from December 23 to January 2
offering a ten percent discount for work booked the week leading up to the holiday, you can use this day to drive customers to your business.

Small Business Saturday:

Some things you need to know about Small Business Saturday:
Small Business Saturday marketing spend last year was$5,500, with respondents using a combination of
digital marketing (email, website ads, paid social media, etc. 77 percent)
       and offline marketing (direct mailers)
Add holiday flier to letters and send immediately with title "JUST IN CASE YOU DON'T READ YOUR EMAIL, WANTED TO MAKE SURE YOU GET THIS."
I'VE SENT THIS TO YOU IN THE MAIL BUT JUST IN CASE IT WENT INTO FILE 13(THE TRASH CAN) THOUGHT I WOULD TRY E-MAILING
FACEBOOK MESSAGE:  IT'S OCCURRED TO ME THAT OVER THE HOLIDAYS YOU PROBABLY DON'T OPEN YOUR MARKETING MAIL OR YOUR EMAIL, SO I DECIDED TO FACEBOOK  MESSAGE YOU BECAUSE STATISTICS PROVE THAT PEOPLE SPEND MORE TIME ON SOCIAL MEDIA OVER THE HOLIDAYS.
       TV/newspaper ads 23 percent).

       Thanksgiving

Get BAck in the Black Instead of Black Friday
BETTE'S "GET BACK IN THE BLACK" ANSWER TO "BLACK FRIDAY"
SEND ON 24TH
YOU CAN DO SIMILAR PROMOTIONS FOR:

Roving Pittsburgher Report, Fallen Woman Theme Inspires Once Again in "La Triviata."

by Hometown Tourist, Clarine Lizana

The story of a fallen woman with a noble heart has inspired theater and opera goers for centuries. The Pittsburgh Opera opened their 2016-2017 season this month with Verdi's La Traviata , as did the Florentine Opera. La Traviata translates as The Fallen Woman , a subject that may seem a little trite and sexist in this day and age. The heart of the story, however, deals with the life choices made by young people of every age, the decision to lead a life of hedonistic pleasure, or a life of true devotion.

Episode Notes:Hear the Strong Case for Anti Inflammatory Diet to Combat Chronic Disease like Heart Disease, Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Asthma. Is it just a buzzword in current medical circles or can following an antinflammatory diet save your life? Mrs. Cardiology’s research shows that it certainly can’t hurt. Listen in to hear what she has researched from authoritative sources on the anti-inflammatory diet. Please share with those whose eating habits most certainly threaten their well being.

From the Mayo Clinic Health Letter

Buzzed on inflammation

by

Brent Bauer, M.D.
General Internal Medicine, Editorial Board member of Mayo Clinic Health Letter

As buzzwords go in medicine, “inflammation” is at the top of the list, and has been featured in this July newsletter from the Mayo Clinic. Mrs. Cardiology explains that her husband, Dr. Santosh Pandit, has been blaming inflammation as the culprit in all chronic illness.

Acute inflammation, however, is the process that heals the body after an injury or infection and is essential and normal. It is an amazing process of biochemical reactions that the human body has designed to heal itself “increasing blood flow to the area and signaling molecules and other chemical components to recruit the body’s equivalent of the Superhero.”  The Superhero is blood cells that fight off foreign bodies. This is a normal and healthy process and not the type of inflammation that is the culprit of chronic disease.  Chronic inflammation on the other hand is a case of mistaken identity where the body’s immune system mistakenly initiates an inflammatory response even though there’s no apparent inflammation to fight off. This type of inflammation is responsible for diseases like asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, even heart disease.

The trick is to eat more from the bottom of the pyramid and less from the top.

The trick is to eat more from the bottom of the pyramid and less from the top.

Some experts recommend an “anti-inflammatory diet.” This is usually the components of the Mediterranean diet and as you can see certainly can’t hurt. These are the steps to follow:

  • Eat generous amounts of fruits and vegetables
  • Eat healthy fats, such as olive oil and canola oil
  • Add small portions of nuts
  • drink red wine in moderation
  • Eat fish on a regular basis
  • Consuming very little red meat

Here’s what the American Hear Association says:

From the American Heart Association In an Article “Understand the risks of inflammation.”

“Although it is not proven that inflammation causes cardiovascular disease, inflammation is common forheart diseaseandstrokepatients and is thought to be a sign or atherogenic response. It's important to know what inflammation is and model-of-human-heartwhat it can do to your heart.”

“Think about a splinter in your finger or an abscess on a tooth,” said Donna Arnett, Ph.D., chair and professor of epidemiology at the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a pastpresident of the American Heart Association. “Our body launches an attack with our white blood cells and chemicals that results in redness and swellingto kill the bacteria or rid the body of the intruder.”

Similarly, for the cardiovascular system, risk factorslikecigarette smoking, high blood pressureandLDL (bad) cholesterolcan “injure” the heart. In turn, atherosclerosis, the buildup of fatty deposits in the inner walls of arteries, can develop. This narrows the arteries and increases the risk they'll become blocked.

The Role of Inflammation in Heart Attack and Stroke

“Exactly how inflammation plays a role inheart attackand stroke remains a topic of ongoing research,” added Deepak Bhatt, M.D. “It appears that the inciting event in many heart attacks and some forms of stroke is buildup of fatty, cholesterol-rich plaque in blood vessels.”

Bhatt is chief of cardiology for the VA Boston Healthcare System, director of the Integrated Interventional Cardiovascular Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital & VA Boston Healthcare System, and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

“The body perceives this plaque as abnormal and foreign ” it does not belong in a healthy blood vessel,” he said. “In response, the body tries to wall off the plaque from the flowing blood. However, under the wrong set of circumstances, that plaque may rupture, and its walled-off contents can come into contact with blood and trigger a blood clot formation.”

Bhatt added, “This combination of plaque and blood clots causes the majority of heart attacks and certain types of stroke, if the blood clot obstructs blood flow to the heart or brain.”

An artery to the heart that's blocked causes a heart attack.

berries-in-a-heart-dishExperts have discussed the potential disease-fighting benefits of diets that try to reduce inflammation.

The Anti-inflammatory diet is not even a diet so much as it is a change in life style and a healthy eating program.

Each book and website promoting the Anti-inflammatory diet has its own spin.

Barry Sears, MD, ofThe Zone dietfame and Andrew Weil, MD, the Harvard-trained natural and preventive medicine physician, say the anti-inflammatory diet is ideal for overall good health. Such advocates of the diet say it can reduce heart disease risk, reduce the effects of existing cardiac problems, lower blood tiglycerides, blood pressure and sooth arthritic joint pain.

Why Anti-Inflammatory Diets?

Russell Greenfield, MD, a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a private-practice physician who studied under Weil, says each plan has its own unique selling point but all site the general concept that out of control inflammation in the body leads to ill health and eating to avoid the foods that cause constant inflammation promotes better health and can help avoid certain chronic diseases.

He continues in a Wed MD interview: “We always thought anything with an “itis” at the end involved inflammation,” he says, such asarthritisorappendicitis. But even the illnesses without an “itis” at the end, such ascardiovascular disease, certain cancers, evenAlzheimer’s disease, may be triggered in part by inflammation.”

The average American diet, Greenfield says, includes far too many foods rich in omega-6 fatty acids, found in processed and fast foods, and far too few rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in cold-water fish orsupplements. When that balance is out of whack, inflammation can set in, Sears explains. Phytochemicals — natural chemicals found in the plant foods suggested on the diets — are also believed to help reduce inflammation. Phytochemicals are non-nutritive plant chemicals that have protective or disease preventive properties.

Anti-Inflammatory Diets: What Should Be In Your Fridge?

The anti-inflammatory diet is “probably very close to theMediterranean diet,” says Christopher Cannon, MD, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston. He co-authoredThe Complete Idiot’s Guide to The Anti-Inflammation Diet, which includes recipes for anti-inflammatory eating and information onvitamins.

[[[27]]]

by Christopher P. Cannon M.D. and Heidi McIndoo M.S. R.D.

An anti-inflammatory diet is the Zone diet with fish oil says Sears, who wroteThe Anti-Inflammation Zoneand whose popular Zone diet recommends low-fat protein, carbs, and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.

Specifics vary from diet to diet, but in general anti-inflammatory diets suggest:

  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Minimize saturated and trans fats
  • Eat a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish or walnuts.
  • Watch your intake of refined carbohydrates such as pasta and white rice.
  • Eat plenty of whole grains such as brown rice and bulgur wheat.
  • Eat lean protein sources such as chicken; cut back on red meat and full-fat dairy foods.
  • Avoid refined foods and processed foods.
  • Spice it up. Ginger, curry, and other spices can have an anti-inflammatory effect.

As one example of a day’s worth of anti-inflammatory eating, Cannon suggests a breakfast of toasted steel-cut oatmeal with berries, yogurt, or other topping and coffee or green tea green tea. Lunch could be tuna salad on 7-grain bread and a smoothie with seasonal fruits. For a snack, try an ounce of darkchocolateand about four walnuts. Dinner could be spaghetti with turkey meat sauce, spinach salad with oranges and walnuts, and apple cranberry pie made without butter.

The diets don’t promiseweight loss, butweightreduction does often occur. And that makes sense, given themakeupof the diet, says Greenfield.

“When you are talking about cutting back on red meat, dairy, fats and trans fats, partially hydrogenated oils, highly processed carbs — and eating healthier protein like fish, eating more — odds are that people are going to lose at least a little bit of weight.”

Anti inflammatory eating can be fun and delicious.

Anti inflammatory eating can be fun and delicious.

Where Is the Proof That Reducing Inflammation Works?

Can a diet really affect inflammation?

Proponents say it can, but they acknowledge that the anti-inflammatory diet needs to be studied more extensively to prove that it actually reduces disease such as heart problems.

“But a related diet, theMediterranean diet, has been and is associated with improved cardiac outcomes,” Cannon says.

Greenfield agrees. “There is ample evidence [of disease risk reduction] on the Asian-style diet and the Mediterranean-style diet,” he says. “When you take a look at the components [of those diets], they could easily be called anti-inflammatory diets.”

Omega-3, in doses of 3 grams or more per day, has been found effective for those with rheumatoid arthritis, reducing morning stiffness and the number of joints that are tender or swollen, according to a review of the research on omega-3 fatty acids and health in American Family Physician.

Omega-3 fatty acids, in foods like salmon, flaxseed and walnuts, are known inflammation fighters. DHA and EPA are two types of omega-3 fatty acids (you'll see them listed on your bottle of supplements). In a study just published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, subjects given 2.7 grams per day of DHA for 10 weeks showed fewer markers for inflammation than those given 2.7 grams of EPA or a placebo

Anecdotally, says Greenfield, he hears from patients that avoiding “inflammatory” foods can help theirosteoarthritispain. He recalls talking to patients witharthritiswho have vacationed in India, for instance, eating dishes with plenty of curry, and telling him their joints didn’t hurt as much while they were there.

Anti inflammatory diet may help joint inflammation.

Anti inflammatory diet may help joint inflammation.

Curry, he says, as well as ginger, is a natural anti-inflammatory.

Not surprisingly, the anti-inflammatory diet takes longer to work than, say, an anti-inflammatory medicine. “With an anti-inflammatory drug, you feel better in an hour or two,” Greenfield says. For the anti-inflammatory diet, more patience is needed. “I would say clearly within just a few weeks most of the patients I have see a noticeable difference [in symptoms].”

Also Curcumin (the bioactive ingredient in the spice turmeric) has lots of science supporting its anti-inflammatory benefits. A 2015 study at the University of Arizona found that curcumin suppressed inflammation and prevented tumor formation in mice with colitis-associated colon cancer. “Ginger is another good spice to use regularly,” says Chris D'Adamo, director of research, Center for Integrative Medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine. It's been shown to inhibit compounds that promote inflammation.

Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid

Alternative health expertDr. Andrew Weil's food pyramid will help you eat the optimum amount of fruits, vegetables and even pasta to prevent inflammation and reduce your risk of chronic diseases. But the best part is that you don't have to cut out things like red wine and chocolate. Both can be good for you in moderation.Learn more about Dr. Weil’s anti-inflammatory foods.

Posted on11/02/2010| By Dr. Andrew Weil|

Reduce inflammation with these anti-inflammatory suggestions, starting from the bottom of the pyramid and moving up:

  • All fruits and vegetables:Try to get all the colors!
  • Whole and cracked grains:Oats, brown rice, whole rye, whole-wheat breads and pastas
  • All beans and legumes
  • Healthy fats:Extra-virgin olive oil, walnuts, avocados, hemp seeds, flaxseed
  • Fish and seafood:Salmon, black cod, sardines
  • Whole soy foods:Edamame, soy nuts, soy milk, tofu, tempeh
  • Yogurt
  • Omega-3 enriched eggs
  • Skinless poultry and lean meats
  • Spices:Ginger, turmeric, garlic, cinnamon, holy basil, rosemary
  • Teas:White, green, oolong
  • Red wine(but no more than 1 to 2 glasses a day!)
  • Wine a little, it's good for your health.

Wine a little, it’s good for your health.

There are many healthy reasons to opt for a predominantly plant-based diet, and research has shown that less inflammation is one of them. A 2015 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a sugar molecule derived from red meat promotes inflammation and cancer progression. So swapping your beef burger for a veggie version (at least once in a while) could help keep systemic inflammation at bay.

Unwanted Hair? We'll Get The Fuzz Off There!

Photo: Six weeks old kitten looking in a mirrorWell, the weather is getting colder, and it's time to get out the winter clothes again. Of course, that's not necessarily a bad thing, because you get to show off all of your beautiful knit tops that have been stored away all year. However, if you're like most women, even if you love wearing those fuzzy sweaters, you don't want fuzzy legs now, any more than you did in the summer. Worse yet, shaving seems like even more of a chore during the frigid months.

That's why this is a great time to come in and treat yourself to our Laser Hair Removal procedure, which permanently eliminates or reduces hair on virtually any part of the body, comfortably and safely. So, just show us where you have unwanted hair and we'll get the fuzz off there!

Men Prefer Putting On Youthful Faces

It was once thought that, while women worried about getting older, men remained unfazed, knowing they'd been favored with the inherent ability to age gracefully. Of course, it's now known that, besides fearing aging as much as women do, men also want just as fervently to counteract its effects a revelation that's relieved them of the burden of having to hide their enthusiasm for our men's aesthetic treatments, which include teeth-whitening, laser hair removal, liposuction, wrinkle reduction, and many more. So, once and for all, it's been proven that men greatly prefer being able to put on a youthful face to having to put on a brave face.

New Roving Pittsburgher Reviews!

RovingPittsburgher, Roving Pittsburgher Report, Fallen Woman Theme Inspires Once Again in "La Triviata."

by Hometown Tourist, Clarine Lizana

The story of a fallen woman with a noble heart has inspired theater and opera goers for centuries. The Pittsburgh Opera opened their 2016-2017 season this month with Verdi's La Traviata , as did the Florentine Opera. La Traviata translates as The Fallen Woman , a subject that may seem a little trite and sexist in this day and age. The heart of the story, however, deals with the life choices made by young people of every age, the decision to lead a life of hedonistic pleasure, or a life of true devotion.

Loudini Interviews Vijay of InRegalia

Born in Mangalore, Vijay's talent was imminent at an early age having won several local guitar and singing competitions. Music, though took a back seat for six years due to the pressure of academics. But destiny had other plans and brought him back to where he belonged - playing music. The journey from an acoustic folk guitarist to an accomplished Rock Lead/Rhythm guitarist has brought with it experience in Rock & Soul bands to which he blends in pop and ethnic sensibilities. Some of his guitar heroes and influences are Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore and Angus Young. "The journey to musical fulfillment is endless " he says.

The Loudini Rock 'n Roll Circus, Lou Lombardi

Loudini interviews Mega X Band

Tracked in an illegal Brooklyn apartment over a two year jaunt, the burnished urban organic art-rock of MXB, transmutes the listener's reality to madcap flights through a cosmic metropolis. Sounding like a glowing multi-colored back room of a dive bar, and you sitting there having imbibed some firey distillate, Diamond Hits mixes up a stylistic cocktail of back beat drum licks, distortion guitar groove, well turned lyrics and layered leather coat vocals.

Roving Pittsburgher Report, "39 Steps" is Non-Stop Hilarity!

If you want side splitting laugh a minute entertainment then see Tony Award Winning Hit Comedy thriller, "39 Steps" at the Cabaret Theater.  What an uproarious experience in minimalistic stage effects with maximum hilarity. Four players take you through the twists and turns of a comedic plot using 1940's or Mel Brooks type music spots to hi-light the intense "drama."  Sorry, no drama just madcap hysteria.

Mrs. Cardiology--Heart Tips Not Tricks, Sunita Pandit

Mrs. Cardiology, Three Herbs to Help Heal Your Lymphatic System

Herbs are a great source which we can utilize to detoxify the lymphatic system and remove toxins. From the well known to the often obscure Ayurvedic, Mrs. Cardiology discusses three herbs to investigate that may help heal your lumphatic system.

The Loudini Rock 'n Roll Circus, Lou Lombardi

Loudini Interviews Alex Vans

Alex Vans had a really, really terrible idea for a business. He got a bunch of dudes, gave them instruments, and made them play stoner rock guitar riffs under smooth vocal pop hooks. He then had the shitty idea to record those sounds onto obsolete physical records and drive around the country in a van trying to sell the records in beer soaked taverns in front of surly bartenders. It was a truly horrible idea. And predictably, he failed miserably. If the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, then you can count Alex Vans as among the truly mad. A mad-genius perhaps? No. But the new EP does kick ass.

The Loudini Rock 'n Roll Circus, Lou Lombardi

Loudini Interviews Eddy Mann

Eddy Mann's a... musician, songwriter, worship leader, teacher, speaker, coach, husband, and father... whether you know him as one or more of these people, you know his heart; you know his love for life.

The Loudini Rock 'n Roll Circus, Lou Lombardi

Loudini Interviews LUSH CAMP

Brooklyn, NY-based indie rock outfit Lushcamp makes alternative rock music that ignites the senses and captures the bittersweet flow of memories. The band?c??s debut album, Lushcamp features catchy guitar hooks and vivid lyrics that capture bandleader, guitarist and singer Paul Matarelli?c??s personal adventures. The album?c??s 10 tunes are a study of the dark and light in people and the colorful dimensions of vulnerable, flawed anti-heroes and the choices they make that shape their journey.

Mrs. Cardiology--Heart Tips Not Tricks, Sunita Pandit

Mrs. Cardiology, Four Detox Strategies to Improve Lymphatic System Function

The lymphatic system is very important to preventive health care. You have twice as much lymph fluid in your body as blood. The lymph continuously bathes each cell and drains away the junk in a circulatory system powered only by your breathing and movement. Imagine your local waste management trucks powered only by what's going on around them. If the movement of the lymph stopped entirely you would die in a matter of hours.! Now that Mrs. Cardiology hopefully woke you up to this stark reality, listen in to hear Four Detox Strategies to Improve Lymphatic System Function and improve your internal "health insurance."

Loudini Interviews Ed Roman

The multi-faceted musical mastery of Ed Roman sparkles like a prism of possibilities, which play out like a synthesis between a children's book, a musical, an expose and a spirit quest - full of wonder, delight, mystery, provocation and sheer excitement wrapped in layers of funky, soul shaking grooves! The sheer expanse of the musical gamut that Ed draws upon is astonishing and he does so with perspicacity, unbridled passion and cunning virtuosity.

Loudini Interviews Sharon Knight

San Francisco songstress Sharon Knight is a Celtic folk singer in leather armbands. She plays octave mandolin as if it were an electric guitar and sings as though she means to summon a storm. Her penchant for combining fierce and gutsy bravado with ethereal beauty, a hearty dose of fantastical lyrics, and an obvious love of storytelling has inspired her own musical style, ?c??Neofolk Romantique?c??. Although her musical foundations are solidly built on her Celtic heritage, Sharon has never been one to hold fast to tradition, preferring instead to look to her roots for inspiration and then chart her own path.
