“BELIEVING IN HORSES, TOO” by Valerie Ormond -
Sadie Navarro worries about her Navy father serving
in Afghanistan. She turns to her love of horses to distract from her secret
problems in her thirteenth year. Sadie commits to showing at the largest local
horse show and volunteering for a therapeutic riding program – both brand new
to her. With her belief in horses, a goal to make her father proud, and the
support of family and friends, Sadie feels life moving in the right direction
is, until one of the therapeutic riding programs arranges for Sadie to assist
wounded warriors. Sadie wants to back out, but knows she can’t. That’s not who
she is. So instead, she wonders how she will find the strength to face her
deepest fears head on.
And then there’s the
first horse show. Unnerved by the enormity of the event and discovering how
hard it is to show her inexperienced horse, Lucky, Sadie panics. An unwelcome
show ring rival, Rachel, makes matters worse. But strong-willed Sadie makes it
through the day with the help of her quirky and caring friend, Brady. Sadie
only has to breathe deep and stay calm through two more shows to reach her goal
of competing in front of her dad.
Sadie gains confidence
through experience with the horses and the people she helps through equine
therapy. She develops friendships and learns about bravery, patience, and
compassion. Standing up for Brady to a school bully comes naturally. She
becomes the mentor others have been to her. Sadie learns to compete.
Days before Sadie’s father returns
home, rival Rachel injures Lucky in a riding accident. Rather than admit defeat,
Sadie decides to show one of her barn’s rescue horses in the final competition.
Sadie understands by choosing his horse, she likely won’t win, but takes her
chance on the underdog. Against the odds, she wins Champion of the year in
front of her newly-returned war hero father. At the end of the show, Sadie finally
confronts Rachel over her consistent rude behavior and unkind remarks. Sadie
knows she should have stood up to Rachel earlier, but she didn’t have the
strength to do so until this time. Although
elated with her year-end win, Sadie doesn’t think her father appreciates how
hard she worked or how much she grew up during his absence. At a unique equine
therapy demonstration for military families, the horses help bring out unspoken
human emotions in the Navarro family. Sadie comes to realize she earned her
father’s respect through her actions and who she has become -- not her winning
performance in the show ring.

When food tastes like mud, smells like
trash and feels like mush, what's a hungry dinosaur to do?
Pickysaurus Mac Synopsis:
Mac is not your typical dinosaur.
Mealtimes pose a special problem for our picky little friend. Sometimes foods smell too gross to eat, they
taste different than they look and their textures feel like garbage in his
mouth. His friends tell him to eat right
to stay healthy, but some things you just can't fix with words.
Sensory Processing Disorder
(SPD), also referred to as Sensory Integration Dysfunction, is a neurological
disorder most often diagnosed in early childhood; it is not synonymous with
learning disabled. Many children
diagnosed with SPD are intellectually average or above average in intellect. Understanding the challenges they face daily
is the first step for caregivers in guiding them in learning to tolerate the
senses, and ultimately succeed in society.
SPD children must learn to
navigate through the "wires crossed" between their senses and their
brain receptors. Symptoms span a wide
range between oversensitive or under-sensitive to stimulation of any, some, or
all of their senses.
One symptom of SPD is the
adverse affect food (taste, smell, texture) has on our senses. Often children who have SPD are labeled as
"picky eaters," punished for a condition over which they have little
or no control. These children have a
small selection of foods called "safe foods" they're able to
tolerate, making meal times unpleasant.
Encouraging one's self to experience new textures and foods in a safe,
unforced way helps the SPD child learn sensory tolerance.

Miller Linhart was born and raised in the somewhat isolated, but nonetheless
beautiful, mountainous town of Lander, Wyoming. Here she was able to cultivate her love of
reading, due in no small part to the fact the nearest decent record store was a
good two hour drive away, and the one local radio station played only country
and classic music. Were it not for this,
Ms. Linhart might today be a rock star, or, at the very least have better taste
in music. As it turned out, however, there
was a well-stocked and constantly updated library much closer and much less
expensive than the local movie theatre.
Thus, the young Ms. Linhart often found herself taking much longer
journeys into the wonderful worlds created by authors like Ursula K. LeGuin,
Judy Blume, Madeleine L’Engle, Stephen King and, of course, Erma Bombeck in the
dusty basement which was the children’s section of the Fremont County Public
up in poverty, Ms. Linhart’s escape from her stark reality came at no cost to
her on printed invitations neatly tucked between the beaten covers gathering
dust on the library bookshelf, yearning for attention. Not content to simply travel to these exotic
places created by the wordsmiths she admired, Ms. Linhart soon knew she wanted
to craft her own destinations for others to enjoy. She applied herself wholeheartedly to her
studies, knowing diligence and discipline would avail her in the pursuit of her
goal of becoming a successful author.
Linhart’s formal education includes CA Barstow College, where she studied and
excelled in Art & Design, as well as receiving a degree in Sociology,
focusing on family and child psychology, both of which were of great use to her
as she had both a family and children of her own.
Linhart also attended the University
of Georgia, where her picture book
manuscript, Daddy's Boots received
the 2005 Dixie Lee Connor Award for Best Children’s or Young Adult Manuscript
at the Harriette Austin Writers’ Conference in Athens, GA.
Linhart currently resides in Colorado
where she’s knuckle deep in her second installment of the Jones, JEEP, Buck & Blue book series, Stuck in the Middle, which follows the foursome’s adventures in
Middle School. Additionally, she’s
working on a YA book series, Hallie of
the Harvey Houses. Two more picture
books are in production and are due out in late 2013; Mixed Up!, and What Does a
Hero Look Like?
In addition to being awarded the 2005 Dixie Lee Connor's Best Manuscript in the Children
and YA, Daddy's
Boots was named the July 2010 MWSA
"Book of the Month," and it took the Silver Award at MWSA's 2010
Writer's Conference in the Children Under 12 category in Pittsburgh, PA, and a
Gold Medal (1st Place) at the 2010 Branson Stars and Flags Book
Award Program in Branson, MO. Momma's
Boots shared the prize
in the same contest, and took the Bronze at
the MWSA's 2010 Children Under 12 category.
The year prior, The
Elementary Adventures of Jones, JEEP, Buck & Blue took 3rd place in the Children's Under 12 category at
the 2009 MWSA Annual Writers' Conference in Orlando, FL. Pickysaurus
Mac was nominated in the MWSA 2013 Children Under 12 category in Dayton, OH.
